how do you turn your weapon back to its original color? will gray dye do the job?

Usually, sometimes it just dulls down your color.. I think if you use a few of them it'll get it back to normal.. wiki it..

do you happen to know if icy blade axe will return to its original color after it has been dyed purple and gray after?

Not, but that is why Anet added the preview window
